Low-voltage motors are squirrel-cage motors with three-phase power supply ranging from 200 V to 690 V, covering a power spectrum from 0.06 kW to 1,250 kW.
They are made with several different fixed rotation speeds, and can optionally be fitted with continuous speed control via a frequency inverter and/or their speed can be reduced using different types of mechanical gearboxes.
As part of the European Union’s efforts to reduce the environmental burden posed by industrial and domestic applications, specific requirements for the energy efficiency of electric motors have been introduced throughout the EU.
These requirements are defined by EU Directive EU 2009/125/EC and the technical standard IEC/EN 60034. Electric motors are currently available at four levels of efficiency:
IE1 (standard or low efficiency)
Banned in the EU and in many non-EU countries.
IE2 (high efficiency)
Banned in the EU. A motor used in conjunction with a frequency inverter is exempt.
IE3 (premium efficiency)
Unrestricted in the EU and most countries around the world (some countries, however, require compliance with specific local standards, such as NEMA efficiency in NAFTA markets).
IE4 (super premium efficiency)
Unrestricted in the EU and most countries around the world (some countries, however, require compliance with specific local standards, such as NEMA efficiency in NAFTA markets).
Unclassified: low or standard efficiency
The EU allows the use of low-efficiency engines with no IE classification in certain cases, such as motors for very high or low temperatures, brake motors, multi-speed motors with a power output of over 375 kW, etc.
The most popular design of electric motor for all types of conventional applications, for general use in a safe (explosion-free or ignition-free) environment, in a variety of industrial and domestic applications (conveyors, hoists, blowers, simple machine tools, pumps, fans, etc.).
Available in sizes 63-200.
The most popular design of squirrel-cage induction motors in cast-iron housing for demanding use in a safe (explosion-free or ignition-free) environment, in a variety of industrial applications (such as conveyors, hoists, blowers, simple machine tools, pumps, fans, etc.).
Available in sizes 71-315.
Cast-iron motors produced by Siemens are split into two categories:
Simotics XP motors are electric motors for use in an environment where there is a risk that combustible vapours and gases will explode or that flammable dust will be ignited.
